Cisco IOS for Not Yet Techies

The latest version of Cisco IOS now sports an
XR after the name, since about this time last
year, so it's now Cisco IOS XR. They also brought
out a new terabit speed core router, the CRS-1.
The latest version is 12.3

New benefits of Cisco IOS XR include:

Secure virtualization
Continuous system operation
Multiservice scale

It is more modular, which should make it more stable and
easier to manage.

On the less positive side, Cisco IOS is becoming more of a
target for hackers, and the company issues security advisories
and distributes security patches to plug leaks and vulnerabilities
found by hackers.

CICS for Not Yet Techies

As an old-school mainframe computer operating
system from IBM, not much new and exciting and
different can be or should be expected from CICS.

Current CICS products from IBM include:

CICS Transaction Server V3.1
CICS Configuration Manager V1.1
CICS Performance Analyzer V1.4

Of course, IBM has created a lot of tools to include CICS in
more modern computing -- linking CICS up in networks etc.

BSD for Not Yet Techies

On April 19, the NetBSD Project announced the release
of version 2.0.2. This fixes a lot of potential stability
and security issues. BSD is progressing on a sort of
steady, unorganized basis, which is standard for open
source software.

Nobody or no companies own BSD, so it's worked on by
groups of programmers and developers on an informal
basis, driven by their desire to be part of the tides
of IT history.

OpenBSD is on version 3.6, since October 29, 2004. They
are planning to support wireless device in 3.7.

Current version of FreeBSD is 5.3, from November 2004.
