The latest version of Cisco IOS now sports an
XR after the name, since about this time last
year, so it's now Cisco IOS XR. They also brought
out a new terabit speed core router, the CRS-1.
The latest version is 12.3

New benefits of Cisco IOS XR include:

Secure virtualization
Continuous system operation
Multiservice scale

It is more modular, which should make it more stable and
easier to manage.

On the less positive side, Cisco IOS is becoming more of a
target for hackers, and the company issues security advisories
and distributes security patches to plug leaks and vulnerabilities
found by hackers.
