Compaq ASE
This is an update to my article at:

Compaq ASE for Not Yet Techies

The biggest change is that effective May 7, 2002, Compaq merged with Hewlett-Packard.

They replaced the Associate level of ASE with a more complicated system.

The entire HP Certified Professional level comes first. It consists of the following:

1. Certified Systems Administrator (CSA)

This is the most basic level, and is described as for those who deploy and manage HP operating systems for smaller networks. It's for the entry level techies who put in their equipment.

You can obtain this credential in the following:

HP-UX v11
HP OpenVMS v7
HP Tru64 UNIX v5

2. Certified Systems Engineer (CSE)

This is for techies who install and manage HP equipment in "enterprise environments" -- which means large businesses, and so is more advanced than the Certified Systems Administrator. The CSA credentials are prerequisites to taking the equivalent CSE tests.

You can obtain this credential in the following:

HP-UX v11
HP NonStop Kernel
HP OpenVMS v7
HP Tru64 UNIX v5

Next comes the entire "Integration" level of certifications.

First in this level comes the Accredited Platform Specialist (APS), who basically repairs HP equipment. You can get certified at this level without going through the previous level, though in some technology areas HP wants you to have basic certifications such as CompTIA's Server+.

You can obtain this credential in the following:

HP AlphaServer Systems
HP Desktops and Workstations
HP LaserJet 9055 & 9065 MFP
HP Mobile Computing
HP ProLiant Systems
HP StorageWorks MSA1000 and SCSI JBODs

The next level within the Integration category level is the Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS). With this training, you should be able to plan and deploy HP equipment and systems into businesses.

The following are available:

HP AlphaServer Systems - Linux
HP AlphaServer Systems - OpenVMS
HP AlphaServer Systems - Tru64 UNIX v5
HP NonStop SystemsOpenView Data and Storage
HP OpenView Network Services
HP OpenView Service Management
HP OpenView Systems and Servers
HP OpenView Performance Insight
HP OpenView - Telecom
HP ProCurve Networking
ProLiant + Linux
ProLiant + NetWare
ProLiant + Windows
StorageWorks + Windows&NetWare
StorageWorks + UNIX
StorageWorks

These do have prerequisites, usually an earlier HP certification, but the Linux ones want other Linux related credentials.

Now we finally reach the Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE) title. This is fairly advanced. You'll need experience with using the particular systems and equipment and technologies you are specialising in. The official corporatespeak term is that they deploy "complex solutions based on HP technologies." Earlier certifications in each particular technology are a prerequisite to taking the ASE tests.

The following Accredited Systems Engineer Certifications are available:

HP AlphaServer Systems - Linux
HP AlphaServer Systems - OpenVMS
HP AlphaServer Systems - Tru64 UNIX
HP NonStop Systems
HP OpenView Network Services
HP OpenView Systems and Servers - Windows
HP OpenView Systems and Servers - UNIX
HP ProCurve Networking
HP StorageWorks
ProLiant + Linux
ProLiant + Netware
ProLiant + WindowsSpecialty in HP ProLiant and HP StorageWorks Integration

The final title to achieve is still Master Accredited Systems Engineer. When you've got this credential, you better know it all. The ASE is a prerequisite for going for the Master ASE.

The following Master Accredited Systems Engineer Certifications are available:

HP Enterprise Management Solutions
HP ProCurve Mobility
HP ProLiant High Availability and Clustering Solutions
HP ProLiant and Messaging Solutions - Exchange
HP SAN Architect - Data Availability Solutions
Internet Solutions
Oracle on Tru64 UNIX
Oracle on Windows
SQL Server
