Active Directory
This updates the article at:

Active Directory for Not Yet Techies

Active Directory is still the distributed directory service that
enables centralized management of a network.

Active Directory now comes with the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 as
well as Windows 2000.

It includes:

Active Directory Application Mode
Structure and Storage Technologies
Domain Controller Roles
Replication Technologies
Search and Publication Technologies
Installation, Upgrade, and Migration Technologies

So Active Directory is responsible for the security of information
as well as making sure the network can be accessed properly by all
users and give them the applications and information they need and
and allowed to have, while denying them access to any information
they're not authorized to have. While managing all the many parts
of the network, from PCs to servers to connections with outside
users and networks.

It uses Domain Name System and supports Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol / LDAPv2 and LDAPv3.

So it is responsible for the central administration of possibly
extremely large networks spread out over the world. Distributed
modern networks would be much more difficult to maintain and
administer without Active Directory.
