Breaking Into Video Game Business
I just discovered a new resource for those of you who'd like to
work in the game industry. It's Game Plan: The Insider's
Guide to Breaking In and Succeeding in the Computer and
Video Game Business by Alan Gershenfeld, Mark Loparco and
Cecilia Barajas.

Computer and video games are now a $20 billion industry -- and
the fastest growing segment of the entertainment field. Over
200 million games are sold annually.

This book covers all the opportunities including game design,
art, etc. I'm focusing on the techie skills needed. Three to
ten programmers work as part of a typical game team.

The types of programming are different. You can read the
details in the book, but a B.S. in Computer Science or Math
is a minimum requirement. A Ph.D in Computer Science or
Math is better.

Various skills needed by the different types of game
programmers include:

C
C++
AI / Artificial Intelligence
Real time 3D algorithms
3D math
DirectX
Fuzzy logic
Expert systems
Neural networks

Don't be fooled. Although you're working on games -- and
a love of playing them is essential and encouraged -- you'll
work very long and hard hours.
