A conservative opinion site
The last series of postings were a blend of economics and politics with computer
careers advice. If you'd like to visit a site that's pretty much all political, check out Don Stevens Productions.

As an update, I'm reading a recent article in one of the newsweeklies about how many companies are re-thinking outsourcing due to quality problems.

Hey, I'm all for the free market. If Indian programmers can't deliver quality software, so it's more economical to hire Americans, great. It's up to the Indians etc to make sure their product is good enough. If it's not, that's their problem.

I recently heard on a radio show that there is more importing of IT jobs to America by foreign companies than exporting of IT jobs out of America by American companies outsourcing. I wrote the host for a source of this allegation and so far he has not answered me.

So although I cannot put this forward as a fact, it's an interesting thing to consider. Besides, I do know that foreign companies DO come to America to take advantage of our skilled workforce. We are nearly as educated as Europeans and a lot more hardworking. Plus, countries in Western Europe have a lot more bureaucracy and union rules to contend with than we do. The French don't want to work more than 35 hours a week and want to take all of August off to go to the beach. Even the Germans take more vacation pay and have a lot more union interference than we do in the U.S.

So I'm sure that we do benefit from "outsourcing" to America. I cannot say for sure yet, though, that more IT jobs have come here than have left.

best,
Rick Stooker
