Web Designing
This updates the article at:

Web Designing for Not Yet Techies

This is a broad topic. It has changed somewhat based on the
technologies available. But no matter what the possibilities
are, designers want to create fancy looking web sites.

Flash and nice looking graphics are of course popular. Layout
and overall design stays pretty much the same. Video and
audio are becoming more popular because more web surfers
have broadband connections and more powerful computers to
handle the load. Also, software to make creating your own
audio and videos is becoming cheaper and easier to use.

Web designers always have the temptation of designing web
sites that are nice to look at but not necessarily
functional for their purpose, especially for e-commerce
sites.

Plus, Flash and other effects do eat up time and attention
and make many surfers give up. Not everybody has broadband yet.
Plus, many people surf the net from work and will immediately
click away from a site where music or other audio starts up
(especially when it's at a high volume!) because then
everybody around them knows they're on the Internet instead
of working.

VRML

VRML for Not Yet Techies

Last version of VRML is 2.0. It's been replaced by an
XML-enabled version called X3D. But the VRML 97 specification
still works, and X3D is backwards compatible with VRML.

Using XML to communicate information will help ensure
uniformity in how scenes and environments are perceived
on different computers. That is a problem with VRML.
