Bioinformatics for Not Yet Techies

Bioinformatics is continuing to revolutionize biology.
I found it difficult to find news on bioinformatics
itself -- but news about genes and viruses and
disease and disease prevention is overwhelming.

In short, scientists are using bioinformatics in many
ways that you do not know about. They are investigating
cancer and how to cure it. HIV. Viral infections.

You name it, somebody is using bioinformatics to
research it and how to cure it.

Biotechnology companies are using this basic research
and bioinformatics to find cures and treatments for
disease that will make us all healthier in the
future.

Although this is not strictly related to bioinformatics,
it is relevant to anyone thinking of changing to a
computer career.

The recent HIPAA act passed by the government not only
forces new privacy standards on medical providers, it
also is forcing them to use electronic medical records
instead of paper.

This will make things more efficient, hopefully reducing
the cost of medical care somewhat.

It should also reduce medical errors -- the #3 cause of
death in America today. Do you know how much time
pharmacists spend calling doctors to ask them about a
prescription they wrote?

It will produce many beneficials results to the
healthcare industry, and will require a lot of
IT expertise to make the transition.
